Captain Van Persie bags a brace in FA Cup win

In todays game, Van Persie was wearing Adidas Predator Powerswerve White Metallic/Metallic Silver/Black. In recent weeks, including his goal versus Liverpool two weeks back, he wore the Indigo/silver/pool version. These are two of three new designs Adidas has released recently. The Powerswerve range is one of the top cleats on the market at the moment, battling with the Nike Mercurial Vapor IV range. The Powerswerve is a very classy cleat, with many advantages over other top brands. For instance, the PowerPulse insole, that has an additional 10grams of Tungsten, adds increased shot power by sending the Tungsten from back to front of the cleat as you swing through. The introduction of SmartFoam technology and a re-designed PowerPulse system gives this boot increased ball spin for accuracy and masses of power when you need it. Weighing in at 11.2 oz. with PowerPulse, or 10 oz. without.
In other FA Cup news, Mark Hughes and his Man City side were humiliated in a 3-0 home loss to Notthingham Forest. Chelsea were held at home 1-1 to a last minute goal by Southend. Premier League new boys Stoke City were beaten 2-0 to lowly Hartlepool United, while Conference side Torquay United pulled off a good 1-0 win over Championship side Blackpool.

Scoring Defenders: Premier League weekend Dec 6th-8th

Scoring goals that’s what!
There were 6 big goals scored in all, and each one had an implication on the result.
- Nemanja Vidic got one of the most important goals of the weekend. With Man Utd’s game vs. Sunderland heading to a stalemate, Vidic popped up in the box to knock the ball into the back of the net after it had cannoned off the post from Michael Carrick’s long range effort. The goal gave Man Utd a 1-0 win and kept them in touch with Liverpool and Chelsea. Vidic currently wears the New Puma v-Konstrukt III, which are set to be released in the US January 2009. To help with touch and control, Puma have created a new front design with padding around the shooting area. This is positioned to help with control and impact when striking the ball. Check out PUMA v-Konstrukt II
- A double from Joleon Lescott did not help Everton beat Aston Villa, although they really should have snatched a point through Lescott’s second goal in added time. 60 seconds after he had tied the game at 2-2, Aston Villa had the ball in Everton’s net to win 3-2. Lescott wears Nike Total90 Laser II. Nike developed these cleats with swerve, power and precision in mind. Their focus was on developing a shooting sweet spot, and hence the front design of the cleat. Known as Shotshield technology, Nike placed rubber zonal rings on the strike zone with direct injected rubber. More info on Nike Total90 Laser II
- Bernard Mendy helped Hull gain another 3 points. He scored the tying goal against Middlesbrough, getting lucky when his shot hit the post and then Ross Turnbull’s back before going into the net. Mendy, like Lescott, wears the Nike Total 90 Laser II.
- Abdoulaye Faye came back to haunt Newcastle by scoring for Stoke to snatch a point in their encounter. Faye has most recently been wearing Adidas adiPURE TRX in master blue/white. These cleats have an upper Kangaroo leather glove like fit. They are about as pure and simple as you can get cleat wise. At 9.6 ounces they are pretty light. Designed for the no-nonsense central midfielder who is not afraid to get stuck in on a tackle. More Info Adidas adiPURE Indigo/Metallic Silver/Rave Green
- And finally, Ledley King did what Spurs strikers couldn’t do in their game against a poor West Ham -put the ball in the net! Spurs had several excellent chances to score before King popped up in the box for his first goal since 2005. King wears white Adidas Predator Powerswerve. Predators have been legendary since the Premier League’s creation in the 90’s. This version has two major advantages over other boots; Powerswerve impact and Powerpulse. Powerswerve allows a player to add swerve to the ball by using a rubber interface, allowing for extra control on contact with the ball. Powerpulse is the insole insert that has Tungsten powder filled elements. These shift as you swing into the ball adding extra power and increased flexibility. The newest version of the cleat comes in Dark Indigo/Metallic Silver/Pool.

Alfonso Motagalvan: Adidas Predator and Adipure

Cleat size: 8.5
What do you look for when choosing a cleat?
When it comes to cleats, I am kind of old school. I don't really like flashy colors, not my style! I play really simple, hence why I wear mostly all black cleats. My preferred cleats mostly come in that color. You have to know your feet and what you feel comfortable in. I personally think that leather is better than the synthetic material. You have to know also whether you want style points or comfort points.
Is there any additional advice you can give?
From my past experience, leather breaks in quickly but if it doesn't, I usually shower with my boots and they will mold to my foot. In order to maintain them in top form I use leather food before I wear them. Remember that the clears are your tools!
Alfonso had a very establisher career at UC Santa Barbara, winning a National Championship in 2006 and having the honor of captaining the team his senior year. In his Junior and Senior year, Alfonso scored 10 goals and had 4 assists from the Defensive midfield spot. Not a bad return! We want to thank Alfonso for his input, and wish him every success as he awaits this years MLS draft!

Nike Mercurial Vapor Berry Picture
New Nike Mercurial Vapor IV, are they Pink or Berry?

The questions is, who will be brave enough to wear these cleats when they are released? They are being released as a limited edition, so when they are released you are going to want to get a pair as soon as possible, believe me even though they are going to be a pink color, they will sell out fast!
Pictures of the cleats have been held very closely by Nike, driving up the interest in the cleats. Even the Professional players and commentators in Nike's advertisments have only seen a picture, but not been allowed to keep it! The only picture released is the one above left. As soon as the first pics are released we will have them here, so keep an eye on the blog for a first look at the cleats. The release date in the UK for the cleats is November 24th!

Tottenhams Resurgence

Funnily enough, Bent recently changed cleats, moving from Nike cleats to the Umbro SX Flare - White/Navy/Gold. These cleats seem to have ignited his goal scoring touch, having bagged 7 goals so far this season and 5 in the last 5 premiership games. The Umbro SX is designed for improved motion and touch control. It has an anatomically designed insock that helps improve comfort. Not only are they made of Kangaroo Leather, but Michelin have partnered with Umbro to develop an advanced PU control print system applied to the front and upper area of the cleat. This helps to increase ball control, touch and help in passing accuracy. These cleats are more of a wide fit, and weigh 9.4oz.
Pavlyuchenko has only scored 2 goals in the Premiership, but both of these have come in his past 3 games and have been winning goals. His partnership with Bent is sure to be the key to Spurs challenging climb up the table. Pavlyuchenko wears the adidas F50.8 TUNIT Russia Upper. The F50.8 is a unique cleat as it allows you to change the top to any style available that you like. Before Euro 2008, Adidas released many different uppers for the qualified countries. The Russian upper comes in a main white, with red stripes and a blue Russian symbol on the tongue area. It has a second density, clear 3D heel/bottom unit. As with other Tunit F50.8 uppers, it has a covered lacing system that allows for increased striking area.

Puma King XL 40th Anniversary Edition

Over the years, the King became synonymous with soccer players around the world and was worn by legends including Brazil’s Pele, Argentina’s Maradona and Dutch maestro Johan Cruyff.
This year’s special limited edition 40th year anniversary edition comes in a red color. The newest addition to Puma’s range retains its classic lines and traditional styling, but it has updated materials, enhanced features and some new design details. Super-soft, ultra-thin full-grain leather is complemented by a high-density silicon heel counter and conical firm ground stud construction for optimal stability and maneuverability.

My favorite feature of the cleat is the tongue, where the cleats 40 years, 1969 to 2008, is stitched on.

Ronaldo's new Nike Mercurial Vapor IV
And it looks like Nike have picked up the right players! Robinho's big move to Manchester City, Theo Walcotts emergence with Arsenal and England(his hat-trick vs Croatia being the highlight) along with Ronaldo, who is one of the favorites for the World Player of the year has certainly helped their sales numbers and is helping them push ahead of Adidas in boot sales.

Tony Lochhead: Nike Legend II

Last season i was wearing the Total 90 lasers but I have gone old school and now wearing the Nike Legends. I prefer leather boots, they dont last as long as the lasers but alot more comfortable and fit my feet better than this years Total 90.
I would pay a couple hundread, you cant really get a good pair without spending that.
Advice I would pass on would be to have a pair of cleats to train in and a pair just to play your games in, as I have been told that your cleats only have about 6 games of life in them before you should replace them. Because we play in the summer here, most of my cleats are molded and I only have one pair of studs. I have a couple of pairs to train in and a pair of game boots. These days I tend to wear the white cleats which I would have never done when I was younger but the majority of the boots seem to be white and it looks weird when you wear black, haha!!

Club Deportivo Municipal Iquique 2005-08(Chile)
Chivas USA 2008-
Cleat size: 10.5
Sneaker size:11
Preferred cleat? Predator firm grounds
In one sentence why? Very comfortable and I like the control I feel that I have with the ball.
What do you look for when choosing a cleat? Color- I usually wear black cleats, Comfort- I do not enjoy blisters, and weight- nothing too heavy
How much would you pay for the perfect pair?
$200 seems to be the standard for nice cleats these days, so I guess I wouldnt pay more than that.
What advice would you give to someone when choosing a new pair of cleats?
I usually have about 4 pairs of cleats, three firm grounds and one soft ground...I like the firm ground cleats to play in when the conditions permit, I also like to train in them. I always have a firm ground broken in and ready to go...for rainy and wet conditions...I usually rotate my cleats using them for games only in the begining, then once they start showing wear and tear I turn them into my training boots. I usually clean and leather food all my cleats the day before the game.
Danny Kennedy is currently one of the leading goalkeepers in MLS. His leadership qualities are well renowned, shown by his captaincy of the 2004 UCSB team that played in the schools first ever National Championship Final game. We thank Dan for sharing his knowledge on soccer cleats with us!

Sneaker size: 10
Preferred cleat? Umbro
In one sentence why? Because I have broad feet and they are a broad fitting boot.
What do you look for when choosing a cleat?
A boots comfort is the priority, not its label. If the boot is not comfortable then you will not be able to play to your best. Second would be the leather of the boot, make sure it’s a good quality so it can last more than one tackle!
How much would you pay for the ‘perfect’ pair?
I wouldn’t really have a limit on a price. If I'm comfortable in the boot then I'd pay whatever the price is, be it $20 or $200.
What advice would you give to people when purchasing new cleats?
First and foremost is comfort. I would always have at least 2 pairs of boots, 1 pair of molded and 1 pair with studs, but usually I try to have 2 pairs of each. This is because of the weather conditions here in
Are there any tips you can give for maintaining cleats?
Always look after your cleats by washing them as soon as training or your game is over. A good polish or some leather balm on them when they have dried should also help increase lifespan.

What your soccer cleats say!!
The Old Pro: Black Boots
- A safe colour and suggests certainty and authority. Always worn traditional black boots, and always will.
The Maestro: White Boots
- White represents purity and light and the Maestro oozes talent and class, and has everything except sweat-inducing work rate.
The Hot Potato: Red Boots
- Red is an intense colour which generates emotions. This fire-brand is impetuous and rash and will make their mark on the game, and their opponents.
The Veteran: Blue Boots
- We look for blue skies, for peace and tranquility. He is convinced that his experience and nous more than makes up for a lack of pace. He switched to blue boots to demonstrate his coolness and calmness under pressure.
The Enigma: Green Boots
- Here is a player who has the manager tearing his hair out in frustration. On his day, he can win a match by himself. One week, storming the barricades; next week, missing in action. Why? Who knows?
The Entertainer: Yellow Boots
- Yellow brings good cheer and optimism. Our yellow-booted entertainer is the life and soul of the team and shows lots of energy and enthusiasm.
The Organiser: Brown Boots
- Our brown booted player will be a smartly turned out defender, unyielding and dependable with a penchant for a sliding tackle.
The Golden Boy: Gold Boots
- The colour of sun brings warmth and wisdom. He is super talented, but he might believe too much in his own publicity.
The Headless Chicken: Silver Boots
- Silver offers light and balance, and he has speed and pace to burn. However he is sometimes known as a headless chicken and his passing can be erratic.
The Eccentric: Orange Boots
- Orange offers freedom and emotional release. Your orange booted player can be prone to impulsive decision making and heart stopping gaffes - the boots express his individuality and desire to be different.
